As you know, our community experienced a tragedy this week with the shooting deaths of three people at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Cahaba Heights. We join with the entire Vestavia Hills community in grieving the loss of these individuals.
We have been assured by the Vestavia Hills Police Department that there is no threat to the schools or community, and we are grateful for their ongoing support. Because of the significant and far-reaching impact of this tragedy, we want to provide you with reassurance that our schools continue to prioritize our goal of a safe and nurturing learning environment.
Many of our schools have programs and activities throughout June and July. All of our campuses where these programs take place will have a school resource officer with the Vestavia Hills Police Department on duty, which is our standard procedure during the school year. Some summer activities may have their scheduled times changed or be relocated to other campuses. If those changes affect your student, we will communicate those plans to you in a timely manner.
Our safety and security procedures are in place at all of our campuses. Those procedures are regularly reviewed, updated, and communicated to staff. We rely on everyone in the VHCS family to support our safety and security plans by speaking up whenever you see or hear something of concern. If you are aware of anything or anyone that represents a threat to school safety, please let a school official know. Thank you for your help in this critical effort.
