Vestavia Hills AP scores reach five-year high

September 19, 2024 — Advanced Placement (AP) scores achieved by Vestavia Hills High School students have reached their highest levels in five years.

In score data recently released from AP parent organization College Board, 86.3 percent of the 592 Vestavia Hills High School students who took AP exams last school year scored a “3” or higher. Scores at this level equate to partial or complete credit for college courses.

VHHS students took 1,381 AP exams in some 25 courses such as U.S. Government and Politics, Macroeconomics, Biology, Calculus, and Computer Science.

These scores represent the highest percentage of VHHS students earning college credit through AP exams in the past five school years, according to VHCS Director of Assessment and Accountability Jason Bostic, Ed.D.

“These scores reflect the hard work and dedication our students put into their academic achievement, and they also reflect the support of our faculty who deliver high-quality instruction that prepares them for the next level,” Bostic said.

By earning college-qualifying scores, VHHS students and their families will save a combined $2 million in college tuition costs, based on current tuition rates at several in-state universities.

The Advanced Placement achievement underscores Vestavia Hills City Schools’ ongoing commitment to providing students with multiple pathways to reach their college and career goals, superintendent Todd Freeman, Ed.D. said today.

“Vestavia Hills City Schools has a 54-year legacy of academic excellence. The accomplishments of our students are the result of their commitment to preparing themselves for the future,” Freeman said.
