VHCS Kindergarten & First Grade Readiness

First Grade Readiness
The Alabama First Grade Readiness Act helps ensure that every child begins first grade with the foundational skills needed for success. The goal of the law is to identify and address learning and developmental needs early so that students receive the support they need from the very beginning of their school journey.

The Alabama First Grade Readiness Act states that students enrolling in or being promoted to first grade must demonstrate first-grade readiness. Students may meet this requirement by successfully completing kindergarten or by demonstrating readiness through the Alabama Early Learning Inventory (AL-ELI), the state's First Grade Readiness Assessment.

The AL-ELI measures essential developmental and physical skills that are important for success in first grade. The assessment is designed to identify areas where a child may benefit from additional support before beginning first grade.

By recognizing potential learning needs early, schools and families can work together to provide targeted instruction and interventions that help students build a strong foundation for future academic success, including meeting important literacy milestones in the elementary grades.
