Dr. Todd Freeman

Todd Freeman, Ed.D., is the seventh superintendent of Vestavia Hills City Schools. He has served as superintendent since 2018.

Dr. Freeman previously served as superintendent of Sylacauga City Schools from 2013 to 2018, and before that spent two decades in Auburn City Schools as a social studies teacher and coach, high school principal, and executive director of operations and services.

Under Dr. Freeman’s leadership, Vestavia Hills City Schools has renewed its accreditation, implemented a revised strategic plan, and opened three new schools. The district has achieved record-setting results in test scores, college scholarship awards, and career and technical education credentialing. In 2024, Dr. Freeman led a system-wide implementation of a comprehensive K–12 academic initiative designed to expand student learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). In recognition of his leadership, Freeman was named Alabama Superintendent of the Year in 2026.

Originally from Clay County, Alabama, Dr. Freeman has worked in public education for more than 30 years. He earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Jacksonville State University, a master’s degree in education from Auburn University, and a doctorate in educational leadership from Valdosta State University.
