Vestavia Hills City Schools hires new athletic director

April 28, 2025 — A well-known Vestavia Hills graduate and administrator has been selected to lead the Rebels’ athletic department.
In a meeting this afternoon, the Vestavia Hills Board of Education approved Laura Casey as the school system’s new director of athletics.
Casey, a Vestavia Hills High School alumna and former student-athlete, brings extensive experience in athletic administration and a deep connection to the Vestavia Hills community.
Casey has served as an assistant principal at Vestavia Hills High School since July 2024, focusing on the school’s teaching and learning initiatives. Prior to that role, she spent six years as the assistant athletic director for Vestavia Hills High School, overseeing numerous aspects of the athletic department.
As a certified athletic administrator through the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, Casey has developed comprehensive skills in athletic management. During her tenure as assistant athletic director, she managed the school’s athletic technology infrastructure, coordinated social media and marketing efforts, and developed the Athletic Intern Program, which provides experience to students in graphic design, video production, and game day operations.
Casey’s experience also includes 16 years as a science teacher at Vestavia Hills High School and nine years as the varsity girls’ basketball coach, during which she received recognition as the Over the Mountain Journal Coach of the Year and Birmingham News Metro South Coach of the Year in 2011.
A 2002 graduate of Vestavia Hills High School, Casey played basketball, softball and golf during her time as a student. Her educational background includes an educational specialist degree in instructional technology from the University of Montevallo, a master’s in instructional leadership from Samford University, a master’s in agronomy from Auburn University, and a bachelor’s in environmental science from Virginia Tech.
Casey is also known for her development of character-based coaching initiatives, including a “Character for Coaches” professional development program created in collaboration with Samford University’s School of Education.
Retiring VHCS Athletic Director Myra Miles said Casey was “more than deserving” of the role.
“Laura is one of the smartest individuals I’ve ever worked with. She has been a part of every athletic success we’ve had here. She understands the lifeblood of this community and has all the leadership skills to take our athletic program to the next level,” Miles said today.
Vestavia Hills Superintendent Todd Freeman echoed Miles’ praise of Casey.
“Laura’s combination of administrative expertise, coaching experience, and dedication to our school community makes her the ideal candidate to lead our athletic programs,” Freeman said today.
Casey will step into the athletic director’s role on July 1.
