Dr. Todd Freeman named 2026 Alabama Superintendent of the Year

June 25, 2025 — School Superintendents of Alabama (SSA) and Schneider Electric are thrilled to announce the selection of Dr. Todd Freeman as the 2026 Alabama Superintendent of the Year. This prestigious recognition highlights Dr. Freeman's exceptional leadership and dedication to education, as he was chosen from a competitive pool of nine district finalists, each representing outstanding contributions to their respective school systems.
Dr. Freeman will be honored at the SSA Superintendent of the Year Luncheon on January 21, 2026, during the association’s Legislative Conference in Montgomery. At the AASA national event in Nashville, TN, Dr. Freeman will receive a bronze medallion featuring the Superintendent of the Year emblem, along with a plaque from AASA. The AASA Opening General Session will feature a recognition of each state’s winner, culminating in the announcement of the national winner.
Dr. Todd Freeman holds a Doctorate in Education Leadership from Valdosta State University, a Master’s from Auburn University, and a Bachelor’s from Jacksonville State University. Throughout his career, he has led impactful initiatives including expanding STEM education, increasing dual enrollment opportunities, and overseeing over $100 million in school construction projects. Dr. Freeman is deeply engaged in civic life through his involvement with local service clubs, church leadership, and coaching youth sports. Dr. Freeman is a valued member of School Superintendents of Alabama, and his engagement reflects his ongoing commitment to educational leadership and excellence across the state.

We are proud to recognize his achievements on a national stage.” Nominations for this award were submitted and voted on by members across each SSA District. Each finalist is recognized as an exemplary leader, respected by fellow superintendents, boards, staff, communities, and parents. They have distinguished themselves through stable leadership, innovative practices, and significant contributions to student achievement, even in challenging circumstances.
